New Year’s Eve is now a memory. But are your resolutions?
Have you stuck with them and made positive changes to your life? If not, it is never too late to start! Or did you start but throw the towel in because you just couldn't’t make it to the gym 6 days a week? Experts say that many people just give up on something because they hit a pothole. They have a day where they eat mostly junk food or a few days of not exercising.
But did you know that people who successfully achieve their goals often hit potholes or detours? That’s right, they don’t just slide down a smooth path to weight loss, a career change, quitting smoking, financial freedom (whatever that means outside of winning the lotto) or any other goal. Instead, most people move forward, take a step or two back, move forward again and try harder, fall back and at some point succeed. That says a lot about the willpower to keep going.
So if this sounds like you and you feel like throwing in the towel may be a good idea, take a closer look at the goals you set and make sure they are SMART:
- Specific – “lose weight” is not specific, “lose 10 lbs” is specific
- Measurable - if you can’t measure success, how will you know if you’ve succeeded?
- Attainable
- Realistic – if going to the gym 6 days a week isn't’t realistic, try for 2 days or maybe 3. Just don’t set yourself up for what you’ll perceive as failure.
- Time-Sensitive. Everyone needs a date stamp on their goals. Otherwise you’ll put off today what you could do tomorrow, or the next day.
