Vitamin D Question of the Week #3

Wednesday, January 28, 2009 by Leslie Ellis
"How many glasses of milk (8 oz) would you need to drink each day to get 1000 IU of vitamin D?"

4, 8 or 10?

The answer is 10!

Each 8 oz glass of milk contains approximately 100 IU of vitamin D according to label claim.

Wow!  That's a lot of milk to drink every day.  I am not aware of many people who would drink that much milk in one day, let alone everyday, including myself.

Yes, you can get vitamin D from other sources, but as shown in this chart below, it takes a lot to equal 1000 IU of vitamin D - 7.3 lbs. of cooked liver!

1000 IU is the amount being recommended by many experts - see Question #1.

Taking a daily liquid vitamin D supplement is a much easier way to ensure you and your family are getting adequate amounts of vitamin D each day.  All it takes is 2 teaspoons at breakfast every morning.  It's so easy!

Be sure to answer the new question of the week and get entered for a chance to win in the the Liquid Sunshine Vitamin D Instant Win and Sweepstakes.  The first promotional period ends January 31st at which time we will do our first drawing for a chance to win a year's supply of vitamin D3 liquid and a half hour phone consultation with my fellow blogger and nutrition expert, Marie Spano.  Good luck!

Linda - if you have an allergy to milk and are having bone issues, its very important that you take a daily calcium supplement with vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to absorb the calcium. You may need to take a separate vitamin D supplement as most calcium supplements do not contain enough vitamin D alone. 400 IU is not enough, especially if you are over the age of 50. As you age, your body is less efficient at making vitamin D from the sun. Check with your doctor to find out how much of each you should be taking.
